Reproductive misconception: why cloning is not just another assisted reproductive technology.

Shortly after Dr. Ian Wilmut made international news in 1997 by announcing the successful cloning of an adult sheep, Chicago physicist Dr. Richard Seed made an announcement of his own that caused similar alarm. At a law school symposium on reproduction, the Harvard-educated physicist announced plans to perfect cloning procedures and then to open a human cloning clinic for infertile couples. At the time of his announcement, Dr. Seed claimed to have already compiled a team of reproductive technology experts along with four couples who were prepared to join him in his effort. Dr. Seed’s controversial announcement has sparked a heated public debate over the possibility of using cloning as another reproductive technology for infertile couples. Despite some of the strong
